Types of standards
Four major types of standards can be cited:
Four major types of standards can be cited:
- Fundamental standards which concern terminology, metrology, conventions, signs and symbols, etc;
- Product standards which specifies the requirements to be fulfilled by a product or a group of products , to establish its fitness for purpose;
- Test methods and analysis standards which measure characteristics;
- Organization standards which deal with the description of the functions of the company and with their relationships, as well as with the modeling of the activities (quality management and assurance, maintenance, value analysis, logistics, projects or systems management, production management, etc).
The role of standards
Standards permeate all business activities and play an important role in the manufacturing and service industries. They are widely used in the sale of their products in national and international markets. Standards facilitate trade, exchange of technology and technology transfer. Use of standards can also facilitate:
- Enhanced product quality and reliability;
- Improved health, safety and environmental protection, and reduced waste;
- Greater compatibility and interoperability of goods and services;
- Simplification;
- Reduction in number of varieties and thus reduction of costs;
- Increased distribution efficiency and ease of maintenance.
