Standards Development Unit
RBS, through standards unit is mandated to adopt and publish all Rwanda standards. These are documents that provide for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for products and their related processes or production methods, with which compliance is not mandatory. It may also cover terminology, symbols, packaging, marking or labeling requirements as they apply to a product, process or production method. Standards that are applied in Rwanda may be either national or enterprise standards or those applied at international or regional level. Among these standards are compulsory and optional standards.
Compulsory standards are those applicable to areas of public interest, hygiene, human and animal health, Security and environment. Standards become compulsory following regulations expressed by a law or any other regulatory document issued by competent authorities. The compulsory standards are published in the Official Gazette of the republic of Rwanda.
Optional standards are those that aim to increase the value of the products. They are set in a way different from the compulsory standards.
