Chemistry Section

Chemistry section deals with chemical composition of food and non-food items and it is subdivided into three (3) laboratories as detailed below:

Food and Agriculture Laboratory:

It contains:
  • MilkoScan FT120: It is used for the analysis of honey, fresh milk, fermented milk, cream, whey, water, juices
  • Kjeltec 2300: It is used for the analysis Protein- nitrogen in food products like maize, wheat, sorghum, millet flours, milk powders, toffees) and non- protein- nitrogen in fertilizers like NPK, DAP, MAP
  • Soxtec 2055: it is used for the extraction of fat in food products like wheat flour, milk powders, and animal feeds
  • Fibertec Avanti 1020/1021: It is used for the extraction of crude fiber in flours, animal feeds
  • Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC-Scanner 3): it is used in mycotoxines quantification and identification in food products like cereal and cereal products.
  • Water distiller: It is used to purify water for laboratory use in machinery and chemical solution preparation
  • Test sieve Shaker: It is used in the determination of flours granularity (maize flour)
Organic Laboratory

This laboratory contains the following machines:
  • GC/MS/FID/ECD: Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrophotometer: it’s used in the analysis of:
    • Pesticide residues in tomato, cabbages, carrots
    • Alcohols like Methanol, ethanol in beverages like wines, spirits, etc..
    • Organic Acids like Benzoic, sorbic acids in juices
  • HPLC: High Pressure Liquid Chromatography: it’s used in the analysis of:
    • Vitamins and Preservative content in juices and other food products
    • Caffeine content in carbonated soft drinks (Cocacola, redbull, pepsicola)

Inorganic laboratory


It contains:

  • AAS: Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer: it is used in the analysis of heavy metals like Copper, Lead, and Iron in food products
  • UV- Visible: analysis of Nitrate, Nitrite, Sulphate in water and Iron in edible oil
  • Flame photometer: Analysis of Sodium in tomato paste, juices, etc and Potasium in fertilizers and animal feed stuffs
  • Polari meter: It is used in sugar analysis (polarization)
  • Refractometer: It is used to determine Total solids, Brix in Juices and in soft drinks
  • Conductivitimeter: it is used to determine water conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS)
  • Karl Fischer titrator: It’s used in the analysis of moisture content in Milk powders, cooking oils, glycerin,
  • Rotary Evaporator: it is used for distillation of wines, solvent, and to concentrate of liquid food products
