Metrology

Metrology covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of measurements and can be divided into general metrology (electromagnetic, mechanical, chemical metrology), industrial metrology focused on measurements in production and quality control (calibration procedures and calibration intervals, control of measurement processes and management of measuring equipment). Legal metrology relates to mandatory technical requirements that ensure correct measurements in terms of protection of the consumer.

Metrology provides the technical means to ensure correct measurements by the implementation of a harmonized system of measurement which comprises the International System of Units (SI), accurate measuring instruments complying with international standards, and validated methods and procedures.
The Unit has three sub-units:

Industrial Metrology
Legal Metrology or Weights and Measures
Materials Testing

AREAS OF INDUSTRIAL METROLOGY

Industrial Metrology is divided into 2 Areas:

Mechanical Metrology and Electrical Metrology.

Mechanical Metrology
Realises, maintains and disseminates the national measurement standards for following areas: Mass, Volume, Pressure and Dimensions.

Electrical Metrology

Realises, maintains and disseminates the national measurement standards for the following areas: AC/DC, low frequency, time & frequency and temperature.

LEGAL METROLOGY

Services offered by legal Metrology are:

1.    Mass measurements verification: verification of all mass measuring instruments(Balances ,trade masses)
2.    Volume measuring instruments: verification of fuel dispensers, verification of tanker (prover tanks,) and verification of oil meters…
3.    Prepackaging control: verification of quantities in prepackaged products (mass, volume, length, number...)

MATERIALS TESTING

The materials’ testing is composed by the following labs:
•    Civil engineering
•    Electrical and electronics engineering
•    Mechanical engineering
•    Textiles, leather and polymer
•    Mechanical workshop
