Consumer protection
Consumers may be subjected to unfair or deceptive business practices, illegal marketers, and dangerous products in a broad range.
The Unit of Quality Assurance is responsible for ensuring the safety, welfare and health of persons on the basis of its daily activities. It addresses the control of quality of goods produced nationally or imported in the country.
Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) through its various sections: Market surveillance, Industry Inspection, Imports Inspection and Certification Services works together in protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from numerous of products. Hence, protecting consumers, promoting fair and honest trade practices.
Quality Assurance Unit comes about to eliminate unfair or deceptive business practices, by daily inspection activities at the marketplace, hotels & restaurants and industrial premises as well as imported goods.
Industrial and market inspections promote proper handling and storage practices of products to reduce risk at retailer’s and manufacturer’s premises. This has a positive impact for manufacturers as it promotes fair practices to control quality of their products during processing and prior to the delivery at the market for human consumption. Again, market inspections enforce consumer’s practices for checking quality of products when buying.
Hotels and restaurants inspections promote appropriate sanitation practices, hence keeping hotels/motels and restaurants clean and safe for the preparation, storage and provision of foods to consumers.
Another aspect for protecting consumers that QAU performs and which increases consumer confidence when buying products, concerns certification of products for continual improvement. This is done through rigorous auditing conducted at organization premises and sites of production if located separately from the organization main office. The certification gives confidence to consumers and claims the safety of product for the consumption.
