LEGAL BACKING
- Import quality inspection in Rwanda started in May 2004 after the establishing of the law no. 43/2006 of 5/10/2006 creating a national bureau of standards, article 4 line 4.
- The Rwanda Bureau of standards instruction No 01/2004 of 01/12/2004 setting up “Regulation for compulsory batch certification of import”.
OBJECTIVES
Rwanda’s policy of trade liberation has facilitated importers to trade in all kinds of products on to the Rwanda market.
As result, sub standards and counterfeit commodities have flooded on both regional and national markets. The consumers loosing quality confidence in most imported commodities.
The purpose of import quality inspection is to:
- Protect health and welfare of Rwanda people through the effective implementation of standards
- Ensure that imports into Rwanda comply with the requirements of Rwanda Standards
- Control the quality of imports
- Eliminate dumping of substandard goods in the local market
- Promote fair trade and block unfair competition
- Assist in solving consumer complaints
- Sensitize imports to ensure that only standard goods are imported within the country
